It is with mixed emotions that I write this blog - I have a wonderful announcement to share but this exciting news comes at the expense of our beautiful Newcastle Chapel.

Pettigrew Family Funerals, Newcastle West Chapel has been sold. Our last service will be held mid November before the new owners take ownership in early December.

In mid 2008 I remember meeting the real estate agent who showed us through this dilapidated space that was home to pigeons and other creatures. It once had been painted a bright blue but now it was weathered and needing much tender loving care. But Ian didn't see the poor state of disrepair but what the building could look like. Over the coming months Ian's vision came to fruition and our beautiful new Chapel was opened to the public with our first funeral being conducted by Sister Annie Laurie on Saturday 2nd May 2009. Over the past eight years 810 families have farewelled their loved one from this beautiful Chapel. As with all things, change is a part of life and the time has come for us to provide an even better facility for the families we serve.

So as we farewell the Hunter Street chapel it is wonderful to announce its replacement. Known as the Steel River Estate our new location overlooks the corner of Tourle Street and Industrial Highway, Mayfield West. From Murray Dwyer Circuit you will enter the car park (185 cars) to find our state-of-the-art facility which will include offices, mortuary and cremation facilities but the most exciting part of this development will be the 2 Chapels and function venue.  The smaller of the two chapels, known as the Private Chapel will be a beautiful venue for smaller, intimate services seating up to 30 people. The architectural designed main chapel with its vaulted ceiling and clerestory windows will be the largest funeral chapel in the Hunter region. Downstairs there will be seating for 500 people, with the discreet mezzanine level providing additional seating for a further 80 people. Along with the large foyer designed as an overflow to accomodate even the largest of funerals, this light filled, modern chapel will be a wonderful replacement for our Newcastle Chapel. A covered walkway will link the main chapel to the function room where families can gather after the service for light refreshments while they spend time reminiscing the life of their loved one.

We would envisage the new venue to open in late 2018 or early 2019. Our Wallsend and Belmont Chapels will remain unchanged providing beautiful services to those families who need us. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me on 49511166.
