Our history

Pettigrew Family Funerals have a proud 50 year history of delivering care for families in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions.

1969

The beginning

For more than five decades, we have been dedicated to supporting families. Our journey commenced in 1969 in Wallsend, where Allan, alongside his twin brothers, David and Neil, joined forces with the local funeral home to establish Crooks and Pettigrew. Their origins trace back to a local carpentry business crafting coffins. In 1972, they took a bold step by constructing our first Chapel, a departure from traditional norms at the time. Allan, David, and Neil ushered in transformative changes to the industry, setting a new standard.

1996

Ian Pettigrew

In 1996, the reins were passed to Allan’s son, Ian. His visionary approach transformed us into the premier funeral provider in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region. Under Ian’s leadership, our facilities expanded to set new standards, including the Hunter Crematorium, Memories Function Centre, Newcastle West Chapel, and the renovation of our Belmont Chapel.

2014

Leanne Pettigrew

In May 2014 Ian and his wife, Leanne purchased the family business. Sadly, Ian passed away on Saturday, 19 December 2015, aged 56. Leanne is dedicated in keeping Ian’s vision alive. Her focus was the same as Ian’s, to ensure the needs of each family that require our services were at the forefront and priority of the business.

2018

Third Generation custodians

In 2018, the third generation, led by Joel as Managing Director, assumed the responsibility of nurturing what Ian and Leanne had built. Tori, Joel’s wife, is dedicated to curating and overseeing our special community events. Amy leads our marketing and design as well as our community engagement, embodying her father’s passion for giving back.
